About the Author

Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

A good player does not mean he/she will become a good coach

The author has trouble with teaching/explaining/communicating/logic/organizing/writing. With Apple's own excellent documentations, you can spend 100% of your time learning. With the author's books, however, the majority of your effort will be trying to overcome the author's troubles. Instead of making a confusing concept simple, the author makes even the simplest ideas confusing. Sometimes, reading the book is like going through a maze -- you just don't know where you are, and you don't know where you will be going.

That may sound like an exaggeration. Wait till you finish the whole book. You won't feel much of what I described in the first part of the book. That is because the topics are straight forward. Any confusion can be overcome by first going through outside sources (like Apple's documentation), and then come back to try to make sense of the author. And if there is anything that troubles you, you will likely blame yourself for being "too beginner" (Don't !). At later parts, however, as the topics get more advanced, the impact of author's troubles multiplies. You will be confused more and more often, and then rely more and more on outside materials... to the point where the book serves only as a list of topics for you to do research on.

Having said that, this book does contain valuable information that is not in Apple's documentation. Again, the author's troubles make it difficult to extract that information. Good or bad, this book is the same as the last year's edition, and updated from Swift 1.3 to Swift 2.0. I am maintaining my rating of 3 stars.

Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2

Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2.0, i0S9 and Xcode 7. With so many paid online tutorials out there, it is really nice to dive into the details and understand the foundation of what certain code elements are and how they are constructed. 95 pages read and about 4 hours of spent so far and I can't wait for the iOS9 programming book to get released. It is really helpful to code the examples in Xcode Playground to see the examples run, especially as a beginner.

Thouroghly written, but a very hard read for someone trying to learn Swift.

This book is not an easy read if you are new to programming. I am a novice when it comes to programming. I have spent some time on Lynda.com, Treehouse.com, and read many different books on the subject of Swift Programming. I wanted to try this book because I felt many of the other publishers explained things well, but they always seemed to be just scratching the surface of a given subject matter. This book will not leave you with questions on whether or not the material is sufficiently covered, but it will leave you confused and frustrated with many of the explanations and examples offered.

Pros: The book is thorough in its subject matter coverage. It progresses in a logical fashion like many other programming books.
Cons: The examples and the explanations are made overly complex for someone who is new to programming.

Most of the examples will have to be read over and over many times before you can understand what it is the author is trying to convey to you as a reader. While reading this book , I found my self referencing other books and documents trying to decipher what the author was saying.

A great book for English teachers!

I'm very pleased with the purchase! The book is wonderfully organised, it has clear explanations for every practice unit and a number of practical exercises. I appreciate that all phrasal verbs are grouped in units, which definitely contributes to better memorising and mastering the verbs. What I like the most and actually was looking for is illustrations and exercises of a practical use of phrasal verbs rather than just their explanations.

One of the best books I've read on wattpad.But the editing is horrible.

I really loved My Wattpad Love when I first read it on Wattpad. So when the book came out, I just had to buy it either by hook or by crook. And bought, I did. But with deep regret, I'll have to say that I was pretty disappointed after buying the book. The editing is horrible- there are spelling mistakes and some other grammatical errors.I'd suggest reading the book on wattpad only. But then if you want the book irrespective of its flaws, then sure go ahead and buy it. It's a lovely story and you'll fall in love with the characters. Also, there's a special POV of Evan's at the end of the book, which is something to watch out for.

Worth Reading

I found this story on WattPad and I fell in love with it after the first chapter. It has a sense of reality in a pretend environment. Everyone wishes it were easy to find love, and this story shows how it's actually not easy. In fact, it's hard, and it hurts, and then it feels good all within Chapters of itself. Great Job Cold Lady/Ariana. I'm buying a paperback cause I loved it so.

My favorite story :)

I have nothing bad to say about this book. It is such a cute story and I love it so much. The only downside to this book is that I've seen a couple grammar mistakes and incorrect tense use here and there. It doesn't bother me much because I love the story so much and have read it so many times, but the grammar tends to get on my nerve. The story itself is a fun read and highly recommended.

David Maguire holds bachelor of science degrees in biology and geography from the University of Exeter, and received his doctorate from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. The book explores the true story and life of 3 immigrants who left home - India - to come to the land of opportunities and years later tried to figure out where home really is.
It is about that all too familiar voice in the head of almost every immigrant - the one that makes you nostalgic when you hear an old hindi tune, the one that reminds you every year how far away you are when Diwali comes along, the one that tells you heavy rains must be enjoyed with chai and kanda bhaji, the one that keeps you awake at night thinking about family, the one that keeps asking is there is a way that leads you back to where you came from?
If that tiny little voice does exist somewhere inside of you this book is going to be a wonderful, poignant read for you. The authors have done a great job penning down the thoughts and emotional conflicts of an entire generation of immigrants. Definitely worth a read.

I never thought I would leave India. But then I did and now I long to go back. But with time the confusions, questions have just exploded. This book puts everything I ever thought of in my mind into words. Couln't have done a better job of it myself.....Kudos to all three authors for putting this together.....

Must read for R2i wannabes (and others too)

R2i is a wonderful book that takes the reader through the journey of 3 US immigrants that came to the United States in search of opportunities, settled down, thrived and then began to question where home really is. I loved this book from the get go - mostly for 2 reasons:- the first being I could relate to the experiences of the authors right from the anxiety of applying to American Universities, waiting for acceptances, coming to the US all by yourself and experiencing the culture here. The challenges they face and how they are able to adapt to this new world and create a space for themselves. The second reason is the writing style of the authors. The three authors narrate their perspectives almost in a unique blog like format and although these perspectives differ, I found myself relating to something in each of them. I have been diligently following Parth Pandya’s blog and enthralled by his writing style. He does not fail to impress me in this book. All in all, I would highly recommend this book as a casual fun read!

I received this book very quickly and in better condition than I expected, since it is very old. I am sorry this book is not currently in print. Once you get started reading, it is very hard to put it down. Great for all ages.
Each story is mostly two to three pages and the best part is the various books/chapters of the Bible are listed at the top of each story so we can read them from the Bible as well. Also, the artwork is beautiful. Several sketches pertaining to each story also help in bringing the story to life.

I grew up with this book and really appreciate the way the stories are written - no opinions or agenda, just sound Bible knowledge written for children to understand. The stories are short enough to keep them engaged. There are pictures down the edges of each page. I'd love to have one for each of my kids to read to my grandchildren!

Daniel Leech-Wilkinson is a writer and broadcaster on medieval music. He is Reader in Historical Musicology at King's College, London and his previous books include studies and editions of the fourteenth-century poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut.

How early music performers got that way

The author tells us how medieval and early Renaissance music acquired its voices-cum-instruments interpretation, then shows that the recent shift to unaccompanied voices in music of these periods is the recovery of an earlier understanding. The first chapter, "The invention of the voices-and-instruments hypothesis," shows that those who rediscovered old music in the 19th century considered it purely vocal music. Even Hugo Riemann in his Musik Lexicon (1892 and 1893 editions) agreed completely. But in his 1905 edition, Riemann insisted that untexted parts of polyphonic songs were played on instruments, and many phrases of texted melodies were actually instrumental preludes, interludes and postludes. This soon became the standard point of view, for Riemann's book was a popular and influential reference. Guido Adler was one of the few scholars who disagreed. Medieval illustrations of singers and instrumentalists were misinterpreted to reinforce this thinking. In chapter 2, "The re-invention of the a cappella hypothesis," he recounts the early reaction to this orthodoxy in the 1950s and the turning point of Christopher Page's 1977 article in Early Music. Since then, Page, Andrew Parrott and Paul Hillier have led many performances and recordings that demonstrated the sound of early music without instruments, and David Fallows supported their efforts in his writings. Two more chapters fill in the background of the arguments. National prejudices and Nazi ideology come into play, and details are provided. No one who listens to early music will want to pass up this magisterial treatment of its 20th-century evolution. The fight is not yet over, for most recordings of this music still use instruments in the fashion that Leech-Wilkinson thoroughly discredits in this engaging book.
