Engaging, real-life math skills!

When I paged through this book at the library, it was hard to tell what it was about. I'm so glad I brought it home and read it to my nine-year-old son. It has an engaging story (how to best count mall shoppers entering from four different entrances) and clearly teaches math-adding strategies (like various ways to add a group like 8, 7, 9 and 8 quickly in your head). He was completely enthused with it, and I'm figuring out how to best procure the rest of the series. The funny thing about math is that it is a skill that we need and use in adult life, but it is taught in such a needlessly obscure way in school. With the way many kids learn, it needs to be connected to realistic circumstances for the information to be retained, and this book does that. We also love the Life of Fred series. About the Author
Gabriel Bauret assure la redaction du magazine Zoom de 1980 a 1984. Il est jusqu en 1993 redacteur en chef de la revue Camera International. Aujourd hui, il realise en tant que commissaire independant des expositions thematiques et retrospectives, en France et a l etranger. Il est egalement auteur de plusieurs livres sur la photographie (dont Peter Knapp au Chene) et preface de nombreuse monographies. En etroite collaboration avec Sacha, il a assure la direction de cet ouvrage et celle de l exposition de l Institut neerlandais a Paris.

A specialist in twentieth-century American photography, Brett Abbott is Keough Family Curator of Photography and Head of Collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. He previously worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum, where his exhibitions and companion publications Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties and Edward Weston: Enduring Vision both received the Lucie Award for Curator/Exhibition of the Year.

Very original and truly beautiful book! Interesting to mention that it is produced by the same designer, Kelly Doe who did Titarenko's previous book and is an outstanding book designer. She is also an Art Director at the New York Times. Titarenko's autobiographical essay is well worth reading.
Many images have never been published before and are outstanding.

It's a very valuable book. Not easy if you're a beginner. You must have good independence, or be willing to spend time with the lessons. I just started it and I can see it will be part of my practice routine for a long time to come. There's plenty to learn and use from this book.

Required for rhythm mastery

As a bassist I found this book really helped to keep me progressing with my skills. It's pretty great at a jam, playing the same old blues tunes, when I can turn some heads with alternate syncopation while bs king a soloist.

Another version of Lucan

If I had known it was another translation of Lucan, I would not have ordered it, BUT I would have made a mistake. This work has a better translation for the modern reader, and lots of good supporting information. Some of the comparisons I made with other versions make me wish I had this ten years ago. The notes are worth the price of the book!

"Gore, War, and Monumental Verse"

Lucan, the author of the full-throated but incomplete epic the "Civil War", certainly deserves a spot next to the great Latin poets Ovid, Horace, and Virgil, whose epic works mark the pinnacle eloquence and intelligence of Latin verse. The epic was written during the reign of Nero in the first century AD, and it is characterized by its vehement condemnation of civil war and imperialistic sentiments--this possibly caused Lucan's later fall out of Nero's favor. The primary characters in the epic are Julius Caesar, who is portrayed as a destructive warmonger, and Pompey (Magnus), who is described as ambitious and over his prime. The vivid descriptions of the wars in this work are exciting and at the same time sobering since Lucan's narrative never fails to reveal those attributes of civil war which invoke the most disturbing of feelings. For all this, Lucan's "Civil War" is recommended, and also because the Oxford World Classics always present reliable translations, and this particular edition retains Lucan's charming and long-winded verse that courses so smoothly through the hearts and minds reader's who are fortunate enough to come into contact with it.

Underrated Historical Epic

An underrated work of the Silver Age. There are some excellent epsiodes that could stand on their own as mini-epics: the suicides of Vulteius and comrades, Appius 'rape' of the Pythia, Caesar's journey by sea, Scaeva's aristeia, Erictho's necromancy, and Cato's journey through Africa to name just a few. The historical insights into the lives of Caesar, Pompey, and Cato are also especially enlightening. Absolutely worth a first and second look!

Challenging, comprehensive, and essential

A challenging read, but essential for understanding international law and its relationship to imperialism, both theoretically and historically. He makes an original and convincing argument that the legal form itself, the law, is directly and fundamentally implied by the existence of commodities. Not only that, but he argues that the ownership of commodities, in the final analysis, is based on the ability to use force to control that commodity, and that violence is fundamental to the legal form, both within and between states.

Armed with this Marxist approach, he is able to explain why international law is law, despite the lack of an armed authority above the world's states to enforce it, which is a big theoretical dilemma that (bourgeois) political science majors and specialists in the field of International Relations (IR) have fruitlessly wrestled with for decades. He also explains why international law persists and why states continue to use it, despite the fact that it is routinely ignored by the dominant powers (the U.S., Israel, Russia, China, etc).

The book closes with the historical development of international law and shows how it is connected with the creation of the world market beginning in the late 1400s and the rise of capitalism as the planet's dominant economic system which completely altered political structures, morals, and ideological norms as it subordinated everything to its logic.

I plan on reading "Law and the Rise of Capitalism" by Madeleine Levy and Michael Tigar soon to help me understand this book.

A sharp and deftly presented leftist critique of international law

Between Equal Rights: A Marxist Theory Of International Law by China Mieville is a sharp and deftly presented leftist critique of international law from the sixteenth century to the present day. Decrying the complicity of legal norms with the violence inflicted by empires and colonization, Between Equal Rights weighs Marxism against mercantile colonialism, sovereignty, the fine line between imposing imperial will and "police actions", and much more. A philosophical discussion intended for intermediate to advanced students of political, legal, and social theory, Between Equal Rights offers a fierce dissection of the weaknesses, cruelties and blind spots of the status quo, and is highly recommended and relevant reading for students of contemporary International Studies with respect to the issues of international law and the current "war on terrorism" being waged by the United States government and its allies.

A difficult academic book on law and Marxism

Science fiction writer China Mieville's Marxist Phd thesis "Between Equal Rights" is among the more challenging books you're likely to read. His meandering and discursive though erudite analysis refers to and comments on an enormous smorgasbord of authors (there are some 26 pages of bibliography), but regrettably often without clear and systematic exposition of their theoretical positions - thus, to evaluate what is being said often requires good knowledge of the background literature being reviewed. The general reader might therefore quickly feel at a loss, if not put off altogether by abstract Marxist terminology. There are also not a few rhetorical assertions and metaphorical allusions. While one could agree that international law is often a formality flouted in practice or a justifying ideology, I for one am not persuaded by his argument - not just because I think the defended theory of the Russian Marxist Pashukanis (that a legal order is a reflection of commodity exchange) is flawed, but because a profound anthropological-historical perspective on law that one might expect from a Marxist is lacking, and because there is no profound discussion of the role of ethics in society. I therefore often find his claims more question-begging than anything else. The interested reader would be well-advised to read - if he has not already done so - Pashukanis's treatise on "law an Marxism" before attempting to wrestle with this book.

invitation to elliptic functions and Riemann surfaces

this book goes from the Riemann sphere up to the modular function and the great Picard Theorem via geometry and group theory; it is an excellent book to begin with from an elementary knowledge of complex functions since it is rather self-contained; I see it as a fine blending of different area of mathematics and as such it should help its reader towards more understanding (through serious work...) of those. As an example, I opened the book at random an found the rule for adding points of a cubic (page 119). As a matter of facts, when I first met hyperbolas as groups via geometric addition of their points, I was rather dumbfounded. It's a pity that the hardback edition cannot be found anymore...

A postmodern second course in complex analysis

First there are two short chapters on the Riemann sphere and Möbius transformations, probably partly familiar to many readers. Chapter 3 on elliptic functions opens with the following sentence, which illustrates the type of unconvincing pseudo-motivation that occur throughout the book: "Having considered the sphere and its meromorphic functions in the first part of this book, we now turn our attention to another compact surface, the torus, and its meromorphic functions." From here the theory of elliptic functions unwinds along a path that is largely hidden from us, although towards the end of the chapter we are rewarded for fumbling ahead with a discussion of elliptic curves and even a vague allusion to number theory. Anyway, the prime example of those "discrete subgroups" of chapter 5 is the modular group, which gets the final chapter 6 all to itself. The whole book has a thoroughly modern feel to it. Admittedly, there is an impressive amount of mathematics for such a modestly sized book, but personally I think there are still many virtues of a more classical and less mysterious approach as well, such as Hurwitz & Courant or Siegel (neither of which is in the bibliography).
