It's largely a sales pitch for his advisory service but still has some useful material

Overall this is a good book with lots of investment advice that makes sense. I've read over 200 investment books and invested for 25 years and this is one of the better ones.

I do have some concerns about it though

* Exaggerated claims of likely returns. "I want you to set a goal to generate at least 23.8% per year". This raises some red flags in my mind. If you can get 23% pa people will beg you to take $100s of millions of fees per year to manage their money so it seems a stretch.

2. Rule 3 is not actionable. It is just not explained, as far as I could determine, how to distinguish "buy" from "no position". Evidently it is based in some way on the degree of positive momentum but it is not clear how. On the web site it refers to proprietary algorithms i.e. secret ingredients. Read the description of the rule here if you do not believe me:

3. Rule 10 also seems under-specified.

4. Turner talks like a geek and non-technical people are going to have trouble understanding this material.

Reference is made to a pending patent which is part of his method. In theory if you could find the patent you could implement it. Two problems a) I can't find the patent b) you would be violating the patent so you can't do it anyway.

Michael Turner states in the Preface that he read a book on investing many years ago that changed his approach to the market. He says it was an early book on technical analysis but curiously, he doesn't give the name of the book. Maybe it doesn't matter.

I would have given this book 5 stars if it had come out before William O'Neil's, How to Make Money in Stocks, but since the two books are very similar and since O'Neil's book came out years ago and is now on its 4th Edition, this book does not seem so impressive. I can't disagree with any of the rules, but one (Don't fall in love with your stocks) seems hardly deserving of an entire chapter and is easily understood, while several others are so abstruse as to be impossible to understand. For instance, Turner recommends using stop losses (no argument from me) but he gives a formula for deriving them that is impossible. Part of the formula involves dividing the square root of "5 Trading Days" by the square root of "252 Annual Trading Days." Huh? Does he mean the square root of 5 divided by the square root of 252? Does he mean the square root of the average price during these time spans? He doesn't explain. The formula, as written, is useless. Similarly, his method of timing the market is uses statistics that are not readily available and depend, in essence, on supplementing the book with his proprietary website. He states that the website is free, but in fact, it seems to only be free for a two week trial subscription. In the end, while this book gives good advice, the details are best left to other, more easily understandable texts.

Better than most

There is much good advice in this book, and those who follow its methods will probably outperform the market a bit. My research does not agree with Turner's list of the most important fundamentals, but his list will keep you out of serious trouble. I also have serious doubts about his market timing system. According to Hulbert Financial Digest, his newsletters have outperformed the market since Hulbert began following it (3/31/04 - 12/31/08), showing a 14% loss compared to the S&P's 20% loss. So much for the claimed ability to make money in a down market.

Beautiful Life . . . Beautiful Story!

Leigh and Tony’s story is amazing. Leigh has had a difficult and painful first marriage. There is no doubt about that, you will feel her pain as she tries to escape the realities of her horrible, shattered life. Enter our Hot Alpha, Tony, to try to pick up the pieces. Tony is sexy, caring and loving as he tries to help Leigh realize that her future can hold the beautiful life that she deserves. Tony is the perfect blend of take-charge male. Their encounters are warm and tender at times, and hot and steamy at other times.

Beautiful Life, the second book in The Carpino Series, is equally as wonderful as book one. You don’t have to read Overflow first because book two stands alone. However, if you read Overflow first, you will have a “slightly” better understanding of what the huge Carpino family is like: funny, loving, in-your-business, got-your-back, over-the-top wonderful!

Author Brynne Asher writes convincingly. She draws you into the sorrow and loss that Leigh has endured and leaves the reader wanting a beautiful life for everyone.

A great read. You won’t be disappointed.

The Carpino's are back and better than ever!

4.5 Stars! This is my second book by Ms. Asher, and I was honored to be chosen as Beta reader. Since finding and reading Overflow, Brynne has stayed in my mind as a talented story teller with so much more to come in future. The story of Tony and Leigh was a true "Gem." Note: this book may contain triggers for some readers. It does deal with some heavy and heartbreaking subject matter.

Summary:
Leigh Briggs' life is an empty shell of what it used to be. The life she once thought of as her saving grace and bright future has turned into a hell so hot and horrible, that she's succumbed to the emptiness that threatens to swallows her whole. She should have realized that nothing good in life, ever came to her, what with growing up the way she did, but she wanted to believe in a better future. That she escaped the path her mother had taken, and found something better. But now she's broken. Mentally, emotionally, physically broken. She just needs this part of her life to be over, so she can forget. Luckily for Leigh, she has the Carpino clan on her side. Although in recent times she'd drifted away from her close relationship with best friend Gabby Carpino, in her hour of need, she proved to be the one person able to save Leigh. With Gabby's help, determination, and generosity, Leigh can look forward to moving on with life, even if it's a life alone. She feels she deserves nothing less, not after what she did and the tragic consequences. What Leigh never anticipated was Tony Carpino. Tony is Gabby's cousin (but acts more as a brother) and he's known Leigh since her and Gabby were kids. Tony is stunned and more than a little upset to find out what Leigh has gone through, and that the carefree, happy woman he remembers, is totally gone. Tony makes it his mission to bring the old Leigh back, and he wants to be apart of the journey every step of the way. Leigh is struggling, though. So much went wrong before, that the idea of moving on to anything better, especially a man, is incomprehensible. Luckily for Leigh, Tony is determined, gentle, strong, and oh-so-alpha. Can Tony repair what has been broken in Leigh or has she given all she had with none to spare? Will he get a proper chance after Leigh's past comes back to cause problems for both of them?

I loved this book. It shows perfectly, the effect of tragedy and trauma on everyone around you, not just the person who experiences it firsthand. It also shows the power of of love and a good support system. Leigh was so sweet. A woman who had never had an easy life and experienced such heartache, but who had a heart of gold and deserved only beauty. My only frustration with Leigh was her absolute resistance to Tony. When he was shot, she cut him off when she should have at least been there for him as a friend. Tony was a wonderful hero. He was the sexy alpha male, but sweet and gentle in his winning of Leigh. That's not to say he wasn't determined or firm where he needed to be, but in the end he was exactly what a woman with a broken heart and spirit needed. I loved Tony and Leigh together. The fact that they've been close since childhood and held secret feelings for each other for years, just made it all the sweeter. This was an emotional book for me. I laughed, I cried, I squealed, I even yelled. Lol. It was a journey of the love of two people who have had a less intimate, close relationship in the past, but only find where they belong by being a couple. A wonderful addition to The Carpino series. I cannot wait to continue reading about this loving, close, gregarious family. I really want to meet the man who'll win Paige's heart. A wonderful read, Brynne! Keep 'em coming.

Newton, author of two other books on the FBI, asserts that "nearly everything you know about the FBI is wrong" and the organization is "deliberately shrouded in mystery." Newton's purpose is to eliminate some of the secrecy that surrounds the FBI while acknowledging that it is impossible to disclose a complete picture of an organization whose records are in large part unavailable to the public.

Coverage begins in 1908, the year of the bureau's creation, and ends in early 2003. Entries are arranged alphabetically and range from a single paragraph to several pages. Access to articles is aided by cross-references directly in the text and a detailed index. Entries fall under broad categories: biographical sketches (Hoover, John Edgar); organizational practices (Wiretapping); programs ("COINTELPRO"); notable cases (Watergate scandal); federal legislation authorizing investigations (Mann Act); histories of other relevant organizations (KGB); and miscellaneous entries (Prohibition). The text is supplemented by appendixes, including a chronology that is current as of November 2002 but omits some significant events, such as the Oklahoma City bombing. Finally, the book contains an extensive bibliography of both scholarly and popular sources.

The work successfully reveals the sinister side of the FBI, such as its surveillance of individuals and groups, questionable information-gathering practices, and J. Edgar Hoover's inaction with respect to civil rights investigations. Articles are generally well written in a journalistic style; however, information is not always presented in a neutral tone. Furthermore, the text contains typographical errors, which detracts from the quality of the writing.

The FBI Encyclopedia covers material similar to The FBI: A Comprehensive Reference Guide (Oryx, 1999), though Newton's offering is neither as scholarly nor as objective. It is useful as an overview that is accessible to a general audience. Moreover, it contains articles on topics of current interest, such as the USA Patriot Act, the anthrax cases of 2001, and spy Robert Hanssen. This work is suitable for public libraries. RBB

Sadly, a little dated for modern kids

I loved this book as a kid and was looking forward to sharing it with my kids. Unfortunately, I think it's a little dated and so the "joke" did not resonate as well. I'd recommend other books from Macaulay, instead. I wish he did an update!

I first read this as a child ever since, I've always been just a tad skeptical of archaeology. I try to respect the science and the research, but there is always a part of me going, "Are you sure it isn't just a bathroom?" Great book, lovely illustrations, and a premise that will quite literally stay with you for years.

Comprehensive survey of media in the Arab World, but a bit dated

There are few books that provide an historical overview of the development of media in Arab North Africa and the Middle East—from first books to the Internet—yet this book does just that and does it in an easy to read style and authoritative voice. My only complaint is that it is dated; the most recent data is for 2007... Changes in the Arab media landscape since then have been substantial. The text is in need of a major update!

a wonderful read

I just finished a previous book of hers and enjoyed it a lot (The Lure of White Oak Lake). So today when I saw JUST JORIE on Amazon, I purchased it on Kindle immediately. I loved it so much I couldn't stop reading until the end!

I laughed so much, I cried. All of the characters in the book and the sweet sexy romance between Lena and Jorie were just "perfect". Robin Alexander just gets better and better with every novel.

I've read and love all of Robin Alexander's books. This particular book like some of her previous work is hysterical. I found myself laughing out loud at my doctors waiting room, looking around hoping no one thought I wad crazy. Sweet and funny story with wonderful main characters and sub characters. Needless to say as soon as I find one of this author's new releases I purchase it without hesitation.
