I'm reviewing the book, Arthritis and Folk Medicine, by Dr. Jarvis. An interesting event occurred many years ago regarding the contents of this book, and I hope it will help me and others, in giving it a try. Here goes.
In 1949 my mother married for a second time, this time to a pleasant, compassionate and honorable man, in every sense of the word, the man I grew up with. He was a dentist, practicing in the town of Flushing, in the county of Queens, in NYC. He was born in 1896 and entered the army as a captain in the Dental Corps during World War I. After the war he continued in private practice until about 1965. At near 70 years old, he had practiced dentistry for close to 50 years, and by that time had developed painful arthritis. He considered retiring, as X-ray evidence showed that nearly all of the joints on the right side of his body were severely arthritic, presumably from leaning over a dental chair, with weight on his right side, using his right arm, hand and shoulder, for so long.
I was about 21 years old at the time and I'm not sure exactly how he came upon this book, but he did and he followed the words of Dr. Jarvis to the letter for about 6 months, or maybe even a little less. He felt much better and a new series of X-rays showed that the arthritis was gone from his joints. I remember him drinking this honey and vinegar concoction multiple times a day and a fisherman, he loved eating fish, so he was right at home in Jarvis' program. Myself, I never even once tasted the honey and vinegar. However at 21, I was very impressed with the unexpected X-ray results, as were the puzzled doctors. Nevertheless, the evidence was there. After a time he realized that he could stray from the restrictions of the diet a bit, with no catastrophic results. He remained pain free, practicing until he was 80 years old; he then retired. In my own mind, I thought how remarkable this was and just as importantly, I recognized that someday I might be in the same position with arthritis. The original book he purchased in 1965 came into my possession and I kept it with me for the next 49 years. Today that 21 year old stepson is also 70 years old and arthritis is closing in on me as well. I have lived in many places over the years, in NY, AZ and now in northern ID. Somehow I managed to always keep the book with me and though I have read it several times, I reread it yesterday and have embarked on Dr. Jarvis' program. Having seen it work on a member of my own family, I have entered Dr. Jarvis' world without hesitation. I have the hope that it will work for me as it did for my stepfather so many years ago. To all of you reading this, it is worth a try; the alternatives on all levels are pretty grim.

HIGHLY RECCOMEND FOR SEEKERS OF GOOD HEALTH

I have a passion about learning good nutritional information. Reading this book taught me about the eating habits of healthy, hard working Vermonters for the last couple hundred years. I can say that drinking the vinegar, honey and water mix is making my arthritic hip joint feel better. No more stabbing pain. I drink 6 to 8 ounces of the honey/ vinegar mix (2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar, 2 tsp. raw honey and water) with each meal. I make up a quart at a time and add 1/8 tsp. of Celtic sea salt to the quart. That's 8 tsp. vinegar and 8 tsp. honey to each quart and water to fill the jar. I think drinking the solution has dissolved the bone spurs on my hip joint which were seen on my last xray. Bone spurs are calcium deposits in the wrong place in the body. Bone spurs snag nerves causing pain. D.C. Jarvis M.D. says the vinegar solution puts the misplaced calcium back into solution and re deposits the calcium into the bones and teeth where calcium belongs. The solution also helps with digestion.

Great reference for product development engineers

The Battery University web site has summaries of some of the chapters of this book. We've been using Battery University for years as a great source of information and decided to buy the book when the 3rd edition was published recently. The book covers even more than the web site and is well worth purchasing.

Although it says for non-engineers, this should probably be non-scientists or non-researchers. It is great for product design engineers to learn the pros and cons of different chemistries and the appropriate handling/charging/maintenance, and to understand failure mechanisms.

I would rate it full marks if it had more coverage of lithium based rechargeable cells. The main focus is lead and nickel, with sufficient coverage of lithium. There is reference to LiFePO4, but very light.

Overall a great read for engineers, and can't wait for the next edition which should have more info on lithium. Hopefully there will be a lot more info on LiFePO4 which is a great chemistry receiving little attention. It should receive more attention now that GM has partnered with A123.

Best book on batteries for the layman available

Batteries in a Portable World is the 'bible' for the battery layman on all the commonly available battery technologies (lead-acid, NiCd, NiMH, Li-Ion). It also covers emerging battery technologies, and gives excellent advice on how to properly charge, discharge, and maintain batteries to achieve maximum life span. I highly recommend it.

Comprehensive and considerate to the non scientist.

This is a very good run down of all you might want to know about the present state of the commercial battery market - main emphasis on rechargeables. He dispels myths, and there's plenty of advice and explanation of how and why to best treat your rechargeable batteries.
I'm an Oxford Chemistry graduate who also graduated in Chemical Engineering and I learnt a fair bit.
There's no maths or complicated electrochemical graphs - most intelligent readers should find this informative.
It'd be handy to have on the shelf for reference on how best to treat different types of rechargeables.

Do Not Buy, Waste of Time and Money

The back cover reads "Here are 6 characteristics of and [sic] Alpha Male," followed by eight bullet points. I should have known then. It should also have been a clue that, "Jack Landry" has no "About the author" or any other qualifications listed anywhere in the book. Additionally, the book opens up with a disclaimer, letting you know that, basically, there were good intentions when writing this book, but the author/publisher is under no obligation to prove or support any claims made within.

This book is utter horses***. Seemingly written by a teenager, this "book" seems to be a watered-down summary of several other books within the "manification help and support" genre, and over the course of 100 size-20 font pages (so using a normal font it would probably clock in around 50 pages), blows through several topics without ever going more than surface deep, and certainly not using any sort of research or third-party support to reinforce any of the authors opinions.

It is mind-blowing to me that this book has mostly 4 and 5 star reviews. Mind-blowing. Vanity Fair probably is a better authority on "alpha males."

Tl;dr-- Save your money. You could get the same (or better) experience by watching youtube videos. 100% waste of a book.

What an interesting book!

What an interesting book! Many Alpha Male books are out of the market, many provide basic ideas and some is just misleading the reader's about its real meaning. For men’s out there, if you really want to know how to be a true Alpha Male, then this is the book that has the most accurate information. After reading this book, I can guarantee you, the feeling of being anxious at parties or being shy around people will leave you alone. Be ready to transform your life in no time! It needs your action and the required knowledge on this book. So much worth recommending book.

The MiG-27LL and MiG-29KVP aircraft used for testing conventional take-off and landing technologies during the Soviet CTOL aircraft carrier development program are also examined. Comprehensive details of each aircraft are coupled with information on the test centers from which these testbeds operate including the M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute in Zhukovskiy, and the Air Force's 929th State Flight Test Centre in Akhtoobinsk.

More old Iron Curtain happenings revealed

Gordon, Komissarov and Hikoki have done it again, exposing more of what went on behind the old Iron Curtain, in a heavy book with a lot of fascinating aircraft.

It should be pointed out that, for the most part, these are not experimental prototypes of new aircraft, but rather modifications of existing production aircraft. The chapter breakdown is very revealing:

1. Aerodynamic testbeds: Airfoil sections, canards, wing shapes. The best known may be the Mig-21 "Analogue" that tested the Tu-144's ogival wing shape.
2. Aircraft systems testbeds: Refuelling, landing gear, control systems, ejection seats, de-icing, boundary layer control, aircraft carrier technology. One example is the Soviet counterpart to the "flying bedstead".
3. Propulsion testbeds: Jets, rockets, ramjets, propellers. Various Tupolev aircraft got a lot of use.
4. Avionics testbeds: Navigation, radar, ECM, missile guidance. There's even a manned version of the "Kennel" cruise missile!
5. Weapons testbeds: Cannons, missiles, bomb delivery. Includes aircraft carrying the Soviet version of the V-1.
6. Weather research aircraft: Mostly Antonovs and Ilyushins.
7. Geophysical survey aircraft: Ditto.
8. Miscellaneous applications: Environmental research, agricultural survey, parachute systems, stealth technology, air accident investigation, space shuttle testbeds.

All of the text entries are backed up by a marvelous mix of black & white and color photos, most obviously never published before in the West, line drawings and color side-views, which also show the insignias of all of the various organizations involved in these tests.

As an engineer, I can appreciate some of the "nuts & bolts" of these design modifications, but any casual fan of aviation history or technology will get a kick out of this work.

The Maginot Line, the complex system of strongpoints constructed between the world wars by the French to protect against attack from Germany, is one of the most famous, extensive and controversial defensive schemes in all military history. An excellent guide

This is a fine history and guide to a legendary--and controversial--fortification system. Designed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, then built during the Depression (thus providing work, though at a massive overall cost), the largely underground border forts (ouvrage) faced both Germany and Italy. Behind their seeming impregnability the French military dozed, sadly convinced they merely had to occupy the gros (large) and petite (small) ouvrage to hold off any fascist invasion. Indeed, we speak of the "Maginot mentality" to this day to denote something providing false security.

All of this is discussed and assessed here, but the real appeal of this book is just how much detailed information is provided. I especially like the 3-D diagrams of the various Maginot ouvrage, as they offer a solid sense of each underground fort layout and its relationship to local terrain. I began with those ouvrage that I've seen in the south of France---and they bring back that visit of 15 years ago with their clarity. Furthermore, they make clear just how much variance there was in this massive construction project--all of it designed and built with nary a computer in sight.

The literature on Maginot's line is substantial---but much of it is quite understandably written in French. Works by Mary and Truttman, to name two of the best French authorities, are invaluable and offer excellent illustrations. But if you can't read the French captions and text, naturally much is lost. The Kaufmann's book provides a concise history as well as the all the context that anyone could need to visit the sites today (more of them are opening all the time). At the same time, it provides something of an English "key" to all those French volumes. I know that I will use both together from now on.

I strongly recommend this well-conceived and illustrated book. For the price, you will not find a better guide to and history of a fascinating fortification.

Excellent Introduction and Guide

This is an excellent introduction and guide to the Maginot Line. It concisely covers the purpose and history of the Maginot Line. It explains the technology and armament of the line. It is very well illustrated with maps, photos and drawings. There is an excellent section on what parts of the Maginot Line are open to the public today, and it includes contact and other information for the various sites.

A Fantastic Method For Study To Become An Superintendent!

I am currently in my Master's program for Educational Leadership with dreams and aspirations of one day climbing the ladder and becoming an Superintendent for a school district. I purchased this flashcard study system as an early approach to familiarizing myself with the scenarios and expectations that will inevitability arise in the position. I am under the impression that this system will also help me when I become a Principal as well. Although I have some time to prepare and many more obstacles to overcome on my way to my future dream job, I know with this system I will be more prepared than my fellow colleagues. All in all, I have found it to be best used in increments as there is a lot of material to cover. I highly recommend it to anyone who is preparing or is on their way to obtaining a Superintendent license. It appears that Dr. Kanovitz has outdone herself again. As a professor of constitutional law, and former user of her previous editions, the 14th Edition of Constitutional Law for Criminal Justice does not disappoint. As in her previous editions, this volume appears current and tailor made for the undergraduate student; particularly in the area of criminal justice; and specifically in the application of procedural criminal law. Of immense value to new students reviewing court cases for the first time is the inclusion of a case citation guide and sample case citations. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Jacqueline Kanovitz is an Emeritus Professor of the Brandeis School of Law where she taught for thirty years and served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs. She also taught at other law schools. She holds a J.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Louisville School of Law. She is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching and writing excellence and has been a co-author of this textbook since the first edition in 1968.
