    Important information!

    This is a great resource book to learn about Discus fish. The author offers great advice on how to care for your Discus fish.

    My first aquarium has several types of fish, including Angelfish. I had discus fish in it but I removed them to my second aquarium. It is about 750 liters unplanted aquarium.

    My second aquarium has only Discus fish, and I am totally in love with them. The aquarium is about 750 liters, and it is planted. I have driftwood in it as well.

    I initially had 11 Discus in it, but now I only have 7. I was really concerned at the rate at which my Discus were expiring. I bought this book to understand Discus fish better and to better care for them.

    I am glad I read this book. Discus fish are very sensitive to water quality, and need very soft water. The author recommends using blackwater extract to soften the water and produce an environment similar to an Amazonian basin. I did just that, and my fish seem much happier and healthier, and displaying glowing colors. The water did turn a bit dark yellow, but my carbon enriched filter soon took care of that problem.

    Here is the optimum water quality:

    Temperature: 82-90 F (27.8-32 C)
    pH: 6-7.5
    Hardness: 2-6 GH
    Ammonia and nitrite levels below zero
    Nitrate levels of no more than 20mg/L

    The author also recommends using a conductivity meter to measure the hardness of the water. I relied on a chemical testing kit to test for water hardness. The test consists of adding droplets of a chemical into a test tube containing the aquarium water, until the sample turns blue. Though a general test, it is not accurate. To have precise measurements, a conductivity meter is necessary, especially if you want to breed your Discus fish. Hard water stops sperm entering the eggs! Monitoring your water carefully, regularly, and precisely can help you successfully breed your Discus fish.

    I am trying to breed my Discus fish, so I set the water temperature to about 31 degrees Celsius (the author recommends temperatures up to 33 Celsius for breeding). I use two heat probes. The author did bring to my attention the risk of the probes breaking or malfunctioning, and leaking electricity into the aquarium. This would stress the fish, in turn lowering their immune system, and finally leading to death. The author recommends using ground probes to protect against such a mishap. Guess what? I just ordered one!

    Another great advice the author gives concerns the feeding habit of the Discus fish. My pet store told me to feed my Discus fish only once a day, and with a very few amount of food he gave me. The author recommends feeding your Discus fish three times a day, and constantly changing their food. I know bought several types of foods (pellets, shrimp, frozen worms, different mixtures etc...), and I always give my Discus a different menu. They seem to be very happy with my restaurant!

    This is a very small book of 93 pages, with colored pictures taking half of the book. It is a quick read. You can probably read it in less than 2 hours, but the information gained will last you a lifetime.

    Review: Discus Fish - Complete Pet Owner Manual

    A good book for the beginning to think about keeping Discus. It provided enough information for me to make the decision to give it a try. Two years later, I still have 4 of my orgininal 6 dicus purchased, so I think it helped get me on the right track. Other books can be had with more detailed information on discus if your intent is to keep many of them and even trying your hand at breeding them.

    Good book but mixed feelings

    This is the type of book I would have been all over like white on rice before I had kids. "THIS is how I'm going to raise my kids!" I would have said. "THIS is how to fix the world and make a better future!" I would have said. But now, I shake my head and say, "Yeah right, this is how you raise your kids on Planet Perfect maybe!" And I try to think, How many parents have loving parents or other close relatives of their own who are not only willing and able to travel or move hundreds or thousands of miles in order to keep Baby out of daycare, but are able to live and work harmoniously with those relatives? How many mothers have jobs flexible enough to stay home or just work part-time for three years? How many fathers have jobs that pay well enough for this to be an option, NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY SIMPLIFY their lifestyles? How many mothers can manage to breastfeed at all, never mind for up to five years? Not many. So what purpose does this book accomplish other than making most mothers hate themselves?

    BUT THEN I realize that I, myself, actually did raise both of my children more or less the way Peterson recommends. I mean I was probably within 90% compliance of everything she says to do. If she talked to me, she would probably be really pleased with my parenting and would probably say, "Good job--your children aren't the ones I'm worried about." The WORST thing I probably did was leave my younger child in group daycare for about 25 hours a week starting when she was 7 months old, but that was with teachers who absolutely ADORED her and were totally tuned into her health and well-being. I don't really think the Future Of Human Civilization Police are going to come knocking on my door for that.

    So--I don't know. Part of me think this book is glorifying "primitive" cultures in an unrealistic and unhelpful way, and part of me thinks Peterson is actually on to something and is probably pretty much correct in most of her assertions, even the ones that are impossible for most modern American parents to implement, even the ones that *I* managed to implement because I lucked into an above-average family support structure situation. I'm giving this book four stars to balance my misgivings with the quality of the research and writing. I'd be happy to discuss my thoughts further if anyone wants to discuss them in a rational, peaceful way.

    Invaluable parenting lessons from around the world

    As a man wanting to one day be a father, I found the experiences and lessons shared in The Mindful Parent invaluable. I too have traveled quite a bit in an effort to understand various ways of living and creating families. While my unprofessional observations were not near as detailed as Dr. Peterson's, I definitely agree with her that there are golden nuggets in the peaceful cultures and it was wonderful to read the conclusions and thoughts of someone who has dedicated her life to treating patients and helping them overcome difficulties related to early childhood experiences. The book reinforced in me the special importance of a child's early life in a way that sounds possible for me to carry out when I have children.

    What a gift to have Dr Peterson set the bar high for new parents and describe in detail how to be a Mindful Parent.     Although today his thoughts are commonplace, and his observations apparently mundane...this is only due to the power of his thoughts over time. Kant is truly a turning point for human thought....one of the first clear view of what thinking actually is...

    It was Kant who let us know, that we are the creators of our own reality, not simply the puppets of an independent world. When I explained to my teenage daughter, that the reason the guy in front of us seemed to be driving so slowly...was because we were in a hurry...this was Kant's influence on my understanding of my self.

    As far as this particular audio program goes, I would give the presentation a B generally, and an A for a philosophy program. Dry but with oasis of depth and clarity. Its a good listen...especially when your driving, and can't fall asleep. LOL

    We had multiple rotations while in school. A lot of the time there was little to know warning what all went on in each modality. "Oh my goodness! I'm so nervous. What do they even DO in the Cath Lab????" Comments like that will be eased with this book. There are short concise overviews of things that go on in special modalities. Very helpful.

    This is a great book for those who know a respectable amount of jazz theory and want to understand the practice and art of jazz composition. Throughout the book, you are given exercises and opportunities to write your own pieces and comes with a CD. Although this book teaches you modal harmony, chromatic harmony, blues writing, ect., there is no substitute for a jazz composition professional teacher who would be valuable to check your work and offer criticism and suggestions.

    Writing pieces on your own is basically made easier in terms of form and structure.

    I always found it hard putting the music from my soul on paper. I have been checking all about music composition on the internet but what I found were just the obvious guidelines and warnings about what not to do. Recently I have discovered the jazz composition book by Ted Pearse, I ordered it through Amazon. What a suprise, the book was just what I have been looking for, being a self taught musician and a saxophonist, I read through the book but one thing for sure I could not put it down because of the wonderful information contained therein, instantly I felt like Ted was just answering all my questions about creative composition using all and beyond what i new about jazz performance and improvisation. Immediately, I felt the urge to start composing there and then because each lesson has a music manuscript for the learner to write on some composition ideas inspired by the lessons. Now I am confident that the bright journey to music composition starts with this book, it gives you everything you need about understanding and starting to be a composer. I have started falling in love with this book and I don't regret having not gone to Berklee to learn jazz composition and improvisation, this book is a treasure Ireland and I'm glad I grabbed myself a copy for an amazing price that is affordable...this is my ticket to a composers world...Hmm!

    I highly recommend this book for jazz analysis and composition, with the condition of understanding your chord/scale theory. It has sectional explanations which comes with exercises.

    The book is divided into major chapters like Melodic Considerations, Harmonic Considerations, Blues and Song Form, Arranging and Formatting Considerations, Metric Considerations, Fusion, Episodic Form, Extended Works...

    My favorite major chapter is MELODIC CONSIDERATIONS ( Melodic Rhythm, Interval Patterns, Melodic Variation via Modal Interchange, Melodies Based on Intervallic Patterns, etc etc etc)

    This book has detailed a lot of new concepts to me. However, I do not recommend this book for total beginners in Jazz.
