Ian Knight was born in 1956. He was a freelance writer on military history for ten years before studying Afro-Caribbean History at the University of Kent. He has written widely on Zulu history and travelled extensively in Zululand. Ian was the editor of the Victorian Military Society journal for many years, and has written several books for Osprey.

I have been very pleased with and impressed with the quality of Osprey publications. The Essential History series is focused on militarily significant periods of history. The Zulu War, 1879 (Essential Histories Volume 56). This volume provides the chronology, background to war, the opposing sides, outbreak, fighting, the world around the war, how the war ended with conclusions and consequences with portraits of a soldier and a civilian with recommendations for further reading.

About the Author
Born in Saudi Arabia in 1962, Abdo Khal studied political science and began his career as a preacher before becoming a primary school teacher. He turned to writing as a way of attacking the corruption of the wealthy in the Arab world. Throwing Sparks won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction and is his first novel to be published in English.

Behind the scenes in Saudi Arabia

This book was originally published in Arabic in 2009, but it has taken until 2014 for it to be available in English. It won the Arabic Booker Prize in 2010 and if it weren't for this award it would probably never have been translated. The author came to the Dubai Literature Festival this year and took great pains to explain that the book was fiction, based on no particular person, but yet represented the excesses and corruption that were rife in his country.

It was not an easy read. I was shocked by the violence and abuse very early on in the book and would have abandoned it had I not been reading it for a book group. It's not a pleasant book, yet I'm glad I read it for the insights it gave me.

Tariq narrates his story, from a poverty stricken childhood, running and fighting in the back streets of Jeddah, to his job in the Palace that has been built on the waterfront of the village, blocking off their livelihood and recreation. The vast Palace sits in a hugely imposing compound and for most villagers, represents some mysterious unknown. For those who do get to pass its gates, it is not the promised land, rather a debauched centre for excesses, and corruption. Once Tariq begins work there, in 'the punishment squad', there is no way back and he becomes more and more tainted by his work.

The author's aim was to show how extreme wealth and power can corrupt and damage all who come into contact with them. In my opinion he did this successfully and the impact of this book will remain with me for some time.

"Over the years I have met many Lewis enthusiasts who have wondered, 'What did Lewis believe about _____?' (You fill in the blank)," writes Vaus. "This book is written to answer those many questions about what Lewis believed." Arranged topically, Vaus's book takes readers through Lewis's published thoughts on subjects such as creation, the Fall, Scripture, the Trinity, prayer, war, God's sovereignty, human free will and Satan. (There are also chapters on Venus, by which Lewis means sexual morality, and "the Tao," a term that he—oddly enough—uses to refer to the Jewish understanding of the law.) Vaus's chapters are remarkably concise and even-handed. In the mind of Douglas Gresham, Lewis's stepson and the author of the foreword to this book, that accessibility may actually be a vice: Gresham fears that this guide "may make the study of Jack's Lewis's theology almost too easy" and drive students away from Lewis's corpus of theological writing. Despite such trepidations, most readers will agree with Gresham that Vaus has given us an exemplary introductory guide to Lewis's thought.

In this exposition of Lewis' theology, Vaus remarks in passing that during World War II Lewis' voice was the second most recognizable in Britain (after Winston Churchill's) because of his broadcast theological talks. If his physical voice has been forgotten since, his Christian apologetics in such books as The Problem of Pain and miracles have grown in popularity, helped by the even greater continuing success of his Christological fantasies for children (of all ages), the Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis advocated what he called "mere Christianity," by which he meant a commonly comprehensible understanding of the faith, unadulterated by admixtures with secular ideologies and other religions (e.g., Christian Socialism, Buddhist Christianity), by which Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox alike could live. In graceful, common language that mirrors Lewis' writing, Vaus distills Lewis on Christianity in 25 chapters on such topics as defending the faith, the Trinity, marriage and divorce, war and peace, prayer, the sacraments, and aspects of the afterlife. Wonderful resource for readers of Lewis

Having experienced a weekend retreat on C.S. Lewis given by Will Vaus, I was somewhat hesitant to read this book because I was unsure that the pages could come close to the expereince and insight gained by personal interaction with the author. I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced the works of C.S. lewis. It could be argued that going to the original sources by Lewis is the only way to experience his works; however, not having the time to read all of his works immediately, Will gives the reader a wonderful look inside the mind and thoughts of the premier Christian writer of the 20th century. What a treasure and wonderful resource whether reading the Chronicles with your children or doing scholarly research into the thoughts and theology of C.S. Lewis. The way that Will is able to take scholarly material and present it in an engaging way to readers at all levels is very beneficial.

I can recommend this book without reservation.

Who's the audience?

I have read Lewis for years and enjoyed him immensely. When I started reading this book, I kept asking myself, "Who is the audience?" People well read in Lewis will know most of the material presented. People who are curious about Lewis should just read Lewis. To me this book is just a good reference work for some limited applications.

The author does present the material in a very accessible form. He writes in a very clear and friendly manner. He has short chapters on different topics like marriage, sex, salvation, God, and the incarnation. You can tell the author's real affection for Lewis's writings. The real advantage of this book is that the author references materials that the average fan of Lewis does not read: the letters, sermons and talks. Another benefit of this book is that the author shows how Lewis changed his theology over his life time.

The main problem with the book is, using Lewisian terms, the book spends too much time "looking at," instead of "looking alongside." The book feels too much like a research paper and does not encourage the reader to enjoy the magic of Lewis for themselves.

I have a website on C. S. Lewis and I get questions all the time about these topics. Frankly, this book is much better than my website and I will probably quote from it in my FAQ section. If you have questions about what Lewis believed on certain theological topics, this book will be a very good guide. However, reading Lewis is the very best method and the most fun way to find out what Lewis thought.

A Great Resource

I've dabbled with reading C.S. Lewis's works for years, and while they intrigue me, I've often found the content intellecutally intimidating. What a treat "Mere Theology" has been for me! Breaking down Lewis's thoughts by topic, it's been a great resource, giving me invaluable insights that will undoubtedly benefit me when I return to Lewis's original works. The author has done an excellent job of presenting the material in an organized, reader-friendly and meaningful fashion.

Wow. Calexa just can’t catch a break. She’s just starting to gain some security and bam! I didn’t guess who the murderer is, so that’s a nice surprise. She gains a new ally and comes into an inheritance. However, there are more questions popping up and since this is showing as a trilogy I’m wondering how the last book is going to wrap everything up. I can’t wait to find out though. Oh! And the artwork is fantastic!

Keeps you reading as the suspense grow more and more

This is the first graphic novel I've ever read. At first I was ticked off because I though it was a regular novel. When I opened it, I didn't put it down until the last page. then got on Amazon and pre-ordered the next book.
