Great tool, Great read

Life Leaves Clues is all about learning to pay attention to the details in your life and what is happening around you, learning from these things and then applying what you learn to better your life. LLC gives a helpful breakdown on how to chase your dreams and pursue your goals successfully. It's nice to have all these tips in a book. Great book that you can read fast. I'll read it over and over.

Absolutely loved reading through this shorter book. Had some great quotes and incorporated in some cool QR Codes that allowed you to jump to a YouTube video. One of them was not viewable on my phone though which wasn't cool. Other than that, I would recommend this book!

I loved the overall content of it. However, I'm not sure if I got a bad download, but some of the excerpts/quotes didn't appear in order. You had to read one font throughout the page and then the other. Made it a little confusing. However, the message of the book was phenomenal.

"Minds" is the more important word

Although "online" is in the title, "minds" is the more important word. The book summarizes a wide variety of the latest results from education science, with beneficial advice for all forms of instruction. This book should be valuable to all professors and instructors in tertiary education, independent of whether they will ever use any technology more modern than a chalk board. The writing is free of dogma and provides references to the research results. I have read many articles, books and blog posts about higher education, with subjects ranging from finance to political correctness to educational technology. As a university employee entrusted with helping students learn, I cannot recall any that have been been more valuable than this one, per page and time spent.

I teach on line and think, for example, that using videos to present information that then get discussed or applied face to face is an excellent way to teach. But while I share the author's opinion that online may be the only way for some people to get an education due to location or lack of money, I feel that she completely ignores some of the drawbacks of solely online teaching and testing, drawbacks that need to be acknowledged so that, one would hope, they could be addressed and eliminated.

She mentions, for example, how useful it is to be able to let students take the same quiz over and over again until they get all the answers right, and that's something that one would have a hard time doing in a regular classroom. That's absolutely correct.

But Miller has either been very lucky in the online quizzes or tests she's seen; or else, she has chosen to ignore the obvious, that questions graded electronically tend to simplify the content dramatically because understanding natural language is still a barrier for computerized instruction. With courses that have a right or wrong, nothing in between answer, say a course in electronics, that's not a problem. But with, for example, a history or government course, where there really are opposing and sound arguments over, for instance, the role of states rights in shaping the country past and present, it's currently all but impossible--or more precisely, I have not seen any examples that prove me wrong-- to create computerized assessments that can respond to nuanced answers.

While she avoids the excessively--and in my opinion, simple-minded--laudatory tone of some online ed enthusiasts, think Arne Duncan, I don't think Miller gives an accurate picture of some of the drawbacks associated with a fully online approach to learning.

The original version of the story is definitely not for kids

Everybody knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but what this illustrated version of the classic tale by Beni Montresor shows us is that we do not know the original story by Charles Perrault. That is not to say that readers of this version of "Little Red Riding Hood" will find anything particularly new in this version, beyond the idea that the title character is bringing a cake and a little pot of butter to her sick grandmother, but rather than certain elements that they have taken for granted lo these many years were not there in the beginning.
With his artwork Montresor lulls readers into a false sense of security, as we enjoy the familiar beginning of the story and see the little red hood that the little girl's grandmother has made for her. Most children will be amused by the dapper white suit that the wolf wears when he encounters Little Red Riding Hood in the forest (note that Perrault answers the question that many of us had when first becoming inquisitive enough to start poking holes in the story regarding why the wolf does not devour the little girl as soon as they meet in the woods). However, once the wolf replaces the grandmother in the bed and lures Little Red Riding Hood closer to his big teeth, young readers are going to quickly realize that this is not the familiar version of the story that they know.
Consequently one thing that can be said for sure is that Montresor's version of "Little Red Riding Hood" is not the first one that young children should learn. Let them become familiar with the sanitized version of the tale, which is par for the course these days (read very young children the original version of "Cinderella" where we learn what the step-sisters did to get their oversized feet to fit in the glass slipper, which will tell you why it was made of glass, and you could scar them for life). Perrault's story is much more in keeping with the grisly fairy tales of a couple of centuries back and Montresor's artwork plays up such elements, so be forewarned.
The introduction to this book is provided by the opera singer Luciana Pavarotti, who recalls how he thrilled to this tale being told by his grandfather. Pavarotti recalls how he identified with Little Red Riding Hood because he shared her fears. When you read this book you will understand why he could call this a violent, mysterious tale, especialy with Montresor's artwork to bring out those aspects of the story.

Excellent inexpensive choice.

The book quality was outstanding. This is to be a keepsake for a child as part of a gift package from a grandma. The images in the book are very good and the story is fairly close to the original we grew up with. Very happy with this purchase.
