Great Western Adventure Fiction

Don Bendell is my favorite living writer of western fiction. THE INDIAN RING continues the tales of a half white-half-Indian Pinkerton agent Joshua Strongheart. I like Bendell's fiction for many reasons. Most important is Bendell's extensive research, with his characters and plots based very much in actual history of the old West. And equally striking is the incredible word pictures that Bendell creates of the beautiful countryside around Colorado, Wyoming, and especially southern towns of Canon City and Pueblo. It is clear that Bendell had ridden these very hills and valleys. As a military veteran himself, the description of good men fighting evil seems to come from his very essence. Indeed, his memoir TRACKS OF HOPE: A MODERN DAY MEMOIR confirms why the tracking details of Joshua's activities are so believable. In this novel, Joshua Strongheart is working to fight the infamous and treacherous Indian Ring, that was characteristic of some of the most ruthless and sanctioned efforts to decimate the Native Americans. Joshua is certainly equivalent to a young Special Forces soldier working very hard to fulfill the motto ' "de oppresso liber" - to liberate the oppressed. And for those readers for whom Don Bendell is a "new find", we are all very fortunate that his previous Chris Colt western series has been re-issued. Check them out too.

The exciting adventures of half breed Pinkerton Agent Joshua Strongheart.

The main character Joshua Strongheart is a dedicated Pinkerton Agent who has established a strong reputation as an investigator, tracker and deadly shootist. In this book he has been assigned the task of ending the activities of "The Indian Ring" which involves well connected people in our federal government who are making millions of dollars cheating the Indians living on reservations. Strongheart has many exciting events while working this case.

As a plus, the reader is treated to lots of firsthand witnessed facts which conflict with our history books and vivid descriptions of the countryside traveled by Strongheart.

The Old West as it really was...

Just had to share...
I finished reading The Indian Ring just moments ago and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Don Bendell certainly has a way with words. I loved how he was able to weave multiple plots and subplots together with such ease.
Bendell, a true cowboy, paints vivid images of Colorado and his beloved horse, Eagle.
He introduces historic tidbits in a manner that doesn't distract, but rather enhances the reader's experience.
If you haven't had the opportunity to read this yet, I really encourage you to set aside some time and enjoy a trip to the Old West!

Her translation, accurate at every turn, is complemented with useful footnotes, especially in those parts of the work (e.g., the Preface) that need special elucidation. The scholarship that went into these footnotes, as well as into the appendix articles and Dr. Warrior's own Introduction, is current and of a very high quality. (I do not think I have ever read a better introduction to Livy.) Nice and Cheap, but has one flaw.

The price cannot be beat, especially when it might just be another addition to a mountain of history books for a single course, but the one flaw is that it does not have the original verse numbers listed. This makes it difficult to cite the book, which really matters when you are using it for a history paper on ancient religions.

An Excellent Translation of Livy

This edition of the first five books of Livy's study of the foundation of Rome is a pleasure to read and truly worthy of Livy's great achievement.

Livy deserves considerable credit for researching, analyzing, and describing the hundreds of years of Roman history that encompass his work. He is a thorough historian who strives to be objective, even though his admiration and devotion to the Roman state is deeply genuine. The events in Books 1 through 5 occurred hundreds of years before Livy's time, and although he may use some license in the descriptions of events he also provides an impressive number of actual names, character profiles, and factual circumstances.

The translation, introduction, and notes by Valerie M. Warrior equal Livy's integrity and have the advantage of modern day scholarship. The notes, which are on the foot of each page, contribute greatly to an understanding of Livy's intentions and provide considerable depth to understanding the early Republic. Ms. Warrior's detailed explanation of the sometimes complex, sometimes subtle definition of Latin words, her knowledge of Roman religion, and the extensive cross-referencing, along with her clear, highly readable translation all combine to make this edition a notable achievement.

Incredible resource

I used to think about testing in terms of just an A/B split test. The most adventurous I got was testing two variables two ways simultaneously. After reading this book I can see how to conduct simultaneous tests of a dozen or so variables. This is truly eye-opening experimental design material. And the marketing subject matter is all the more relevant for those web marketers among us.

The book is straight forward and focused with a series of incrementally more advanced methods so you can match the appropriate method to the situation you want to test. So whether you want to do a full factorial analysis or a fractional factorial experiment, after reading this material you'll know the strengths and weaknesses of each as well as the right situation to employ them. I have not seen this material anywhere else.

The book is advanced stuff, but entirely approachable. This does not mention AdWords or Google Web Site Optimizer, but the methods are entirely consistent with applications in those fields.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to extract more value from testing. There is a better way to test and the methods are right here.

One of a kind resource

Efficient experimental design techniques are known and applied in many fields, but marketing has lagged behind. A/B, Champion/Challenger, one-factor-at-a-time tests are much more prevalent in marketing than carefully planned tests that take advantage of the efficiencies inherent in factorial treatment structure. This book is a solid (and very readable) reference that should go a long way to changing that. If you know there's a better way to do your marketing tests, but can't get your head around the manufacturing, agricultural, or psychology examples in every other design text out there, then this is the book for you. If you don't know there's a better way to plan your marketing tests, read this before you competition does!

When students turn in their tests, they immediately pick up the packet for the next chapter I make out of this workbook and get started. That way students who finish the test early have something to do. Then I have them keep it out during class time, and they can work on it at their own pace. Always something to focus and fall back on.
