Superior Donuts takes place in the historic Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, where Arthur Przybyszewski runs the donut shop that has been in his family for sixty years. Franco Wicks, a young black man and Arthur's only employee, wants to modernize the shop, while Arthur is more content to spend the day smoking weed and reminiscing about his Polish immigrant father. This provocative comedy, set in the heart of one of Chicago's most diverse communities, explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.
Tracy Letts was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play for August: Osage County, which premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2007 before playing Broadway, London's National Theatre, and a forty-week US tour. Other plays include Pulitzer Prize finalist Man from Nebraska; Killer Joe, which was adapted into a critically acclaimed film; and Bug, which has played in New York, Chicago, and London and was adapted into a film. Letts is an ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company and garnered a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Tracy Letts is the award-winning author of August: Osage County, Killer Joe, Bug and Man From Nebraska, which was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where August: Osage County premiered.

A Superior Achievement

Of all the plays Mr. Letts has written, to date, this is his best. It has more heart than any of his other work, and it brilliantly captures the character of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. It's funny, brutal and topical. In a way, it's even Chekhovian.

Beautiful

I enjoyed it. Characters were so real and well developed, I became attached to them easily. Makes you reflect on values and provides great insight. The play lingers in you thoughts and I savor thinking of it.

Strong play, nice blend of specific and general

This reads as and, I think, is a very, very "Chicago" play. And it is essentially a "feel good" play without being icky-sweet-sentimental. ("From Letts? I can't imagine!") It is very human and contains universal themes as well as a notable but subtle ideological overtones. In all, a very nice play. It's easy to imagine that age appropriate casting and at least some representation of the warranted accents would make a production much stronger and very fulfilling for an audience.
