An excellent introduction to and reflection on Judaism

After reading literally nine or ten books intended to acquaint readers with the Jewish faith and culture, none ever came close to tying all the ends together and creating a real sense of understanding. This book definitely succeeded where the others left me feeling a bit uncertain, elucidating for me things I had long wondered about. Rabbi Dossick does an amazing job of making the obscure comprehensible and doing over and over again. His chapters are put together on certain themes and different topics within the theme are addressed individually before being connected at the end of each chapter and in different essays ('An Essay on Law and Spirit,' 'An Essay on Right and Wrong'). He uses the Hebrew phrases where possible and each section introduces us to one or two new but fundamental Hebrew words, written in Hebrew and next to a transliteration. If looking for a book to introduce you to Judaism, one that's simultaneously basic in the sense that it expects no prior knowledge but stimulating in its expectation that the people reading it are intelligent people capable of choosing from the many different paths he describes, this is a book to buy, reread, and refer to. This book is *truly* the most comprehensive and illuminating book I have yet read, and I highly recommend it to anyone still feeling that their grasp on Judaism is not as strong or as clear as it could be.

Accept no substitutes!

This book is one of the best that I've read in any subject! It is completely and totally accessible to all who are interested in the subject. It is written in a very personal format, so that the reader feels that he/she is being spoken to by the author. Without being condescending or assuming any foreknowledge, the author CLEARLY and SIMPLY(two very important criteria) explains all aspects of Judaism, from the beginning to present day. The reader is left with a solid understanding. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Understanding and pride without preaching

This book, with elegance and simplicity seeks to explains what it means to be Jewish; the beliefs, people, and sacred texts starting with the Torah. Despite wanderings and settlements from Spain, Eastern Europe, and Ethiopia, and Exiles and destructions of the Temple, they have remained "The Chosen People". This book helped me realize the uniqueness of this last century on the Jews, from the Holocaust to the importance of the creation of Israel. The essays that Rabbi Dosick sprinkled through the book, offer a glimpse of a way of thinking about ethics, justice, and law. He presents his personal views, for what they are, and recognizes other views.
The description of Jewish Holiday and Worship, describe the rituals and worship that historically permeate the Jewish life. Growing up Christian, I felt some loss that we had discarded these remembrances of God from our daily life. His own essay on "Law and Spirit" recognizes some of the differences in spirit between Christianity and Judaism. It also helped me appreciate some of the Jewish observances, that as an outsider seem unusual.

A wonderful, informative, and easy to follow Korean cookbook filled with 135 diverse recipes!

I did not know much at all about Korean food before reading this cookbook. I had the pleasure of dining in a fantastic Korean restaurant recently and was so enticed by the diversity and deliciousness of the food that I had to try some things out on my own! Korean cuisine is fun and packed with so many different flavors, and it can be pleasing to many different palates.

This book begins with an introduction by the author and his history of growing up in an American/Korean home, learning the secrets of Korean cooking from the elder members of his household. It then goes on to give an overview of Korean cooking history and style. I found a section on Korean table manners to be very interesting!

The second chapter was very helpful to me as a first timer in that it goes over what you need to create the recipes successfully. There is a section on essential cookware and tableware, and one on pantry staple you need to have on hand. Thankfully it also talked about where to find those staples ( a few I had never even heard of) and there is even an appendix section giving you websites where products can be ordered. It is so nice to be prepared!

The recipes are amazing, and so many different things you can make! Each recipe is laid out in pretty much the same format. They give you and American and a Korean name for the dish, followed by a paragraph introduction/background. There is a clearly stated prep time and cook time. Each recipe is labeled for vegan-friendly, vegetarian-friendly, or gluten-free, and little chili peppers mark the spiciness of the dish. All ingredients are in bold on the left, and cooking instructions are numbered on the right. Most also include cooking tips at the bottom that I find very helpful!

This book is well laid out and easy to follow. It would be very helpful for anyone who wants to try Korean cooking!

I love to try cooking new foods

I don't have much experience with Korean food, but that is exactly why I was excited to try out this book. I love to try cooking new foods, especially things that are outside my normal experience. This book is cool. It immerses you in the Korean traditions and culture. It gives you a detailed explanation of all the tools and essentials you will need for Korean cooking, a rice cooker being very important. It gives you a rundown on all of the important pantry staples to have on hand if you'll be doing a lot of Korean cooking. They break it down into great sections like
Stocks, sauces and marinades
Kimchi and pickles
Appetizers and anju (bar food)
Side dishes
Soups and stews
Rice and noodles
Fish and seafood
Fusion fare
Poultry and meat
Drinks and sweet treats

There are so many great recipes that I'm looking forward to trying. The recipes are equipped with little chilli peppers to show you the amount of spiciness. There are also a bunch of vegetarian and gluten free options that are clearly labeled. Some of the ones that sound great to me are
Hangover Soup
Mixed Rice and Veggies
Beef skewers with rice cakes and scallions
Rice stuffed tofu pockets
Mint chocoberry bingsoo
Brown sugar hotcakes
There are also some that scare me a little like jellyfish salad, but I think I'm really excited to try my hand at some Korean food. I know my boyfriend loves Kimchi, so he will be excited about that. This is a great book, and would make a great gift for your favorite experimental chef.

I like that early on

My cousin has been raving about many of the dishes his wife of Korean heritage can cook and I was curious on how to prepare some dishes from the Korean restaurants at home. I like that early on, this book explains some of the basic ingredients used in this type of cooking to get prepared in case you might not already have them in your kitchen.

Part 2 starts you in on the actual recipes. There is a little bit of everything with sauces, homemade broth, kimchi and pickles, meats, drinks, and dishes with rice or noodles. In an effort to eat more fermented foods, I was happy to find a recipe for kimchi in this book without radish (is one with radish too) since we don't have them here in Minnesota typically growing in the garden this time of year unless you started a batch from seed a few months ago. I have plenty of cabbage though.

Overall, I didn't have all the ingredients already on hand in my kitchen for some of the recipes provided in Seoul Food Korean Cookbook so I have purchased some and need to get more on a future shopping trip, but the instructions seem very user friendly. If you rely on photos for your cooking, this book only has a few provided.

The best study strategy is to use a DB2 tutorial or training guide plus this Q/A book to practice for the exam.

Worthless!

Zero stars. Worthless to a surprising extent. The IBM practice questions were much more helpful than this. Your best bet is to get the Preparation Manual by Sanders and bypass this. Hit that manual hard. Don't waste your money on this.

Great first impression, but...

When I first saw this book and began reading it, I was very impressed. There's lots of useful information even for a keen garlic grower over 30 years. The book is physically beautiful with a sewn binding so it oozes quality. Unfortunately, the book is marred by appalling editing. Through is spelt "though", than is spelt "that" etc. Worse, when trying to locate a seller of unusual garlic seed in my neck of the woods, Ms Woodward gives email an address that lacks the .com, .net, .org and a website that just displays a picture.

Given the poor editing, some doubt must be cast on the veracity of the information contained in this book.

Great series

HE'S A MAGIC MAN (Children of Merlin #2) by Susan Squires

HE'S A MAGIC MAN is the second novel in Susan Squires' Children of Merlin series relating magic and power to the descendants of Merlin-the Tremaine family. The belief that each descendant would come into their power and magic, when they meet the one person that will unlock their destiny, is the premise behind the Children of Merlin.

Drew Tremaine had hoped that she found the one to unlock her magic but finding out that he had a bevy of woman at his beck and call more than proved that he was not the one. But watching an episode of `Treasure Hunters' Drew found herself inexplicably drawn to a man in the background of the show. Could this man be her destiny? The one? And with the questions came a vision of the future that found Drew somewhere in the Florida Keys. But she had to be careful if her family discovered that she was heading to the Sunshine state alone, looking for a stranger that she knew nothing about.

Michaelangelo (Dowser) Redmond was getting drunk and needed to stay numb to forget the past. And when a beautiful woman came looking for him in the sleaziest bar in town, he knew there would be trouble. But he never expected to find himself tied to his own bed while Drew Tremaine played nursemaid to his hangover and detox DTs. A former Delta Forcer Operator, Michael could not believe his reaction to Drew or the sexual chemistry that came between.

Dowser was psychic and his special ability meant he could be the `one' for Drew. But Dowser's revelations about his past dampened Drew's excitement when she learned there was someone else.

Dowser's latest job involved a treasure hunter named Brandon St. Claire and his girlfriend Rhiannon, and he wanted Drew along for the ride. Finding the Santa Angela would ensure a healthy pay day for Dowser, and using his psychic powers to `find' made the job that much more easy. But Brandon St. Claire wanted Dowser to find something more and when he did, they promised to bring someone back from his past- a promise that he didn't know if they could keep.

Drew and Michaels's relationship is difficult at the start. Believing Michael is her destiny, Drew continues to nurse Michael back to health following their run-in at the bar. But as the days go by, the sexual tension increases and neither is willing to admit to their desire. And Michael is having difficulty releasing the memories from his past. And the longer the two are together, the more powerful their magic becomes.

Throughout the novel we are aware of a secondary storyline regarding a search for a talisman-a mystical sword. And Drew's visions are some how connected. With the continuing threat against her family and the Children of Merlin mystery, there were others hoping to use the power for themselves and Drew's escape to the Florida Keys had put her in more danger than she had ever thought possible and the very real possibility that she would lose Michael forever. And the entire Tremaine family was now in danger, when Michael revealed the truth behind Drew's connection and the sword.

HE'S A MAGIC MAN is another fantastic addition to Susan Squires' Children of Merlin series. Well written, fast paced, action packed and at times a heart breaking storyline that had me dabbing a few tears. The character development flowed easily throughout the story and in the end you loved the Tremaine's as though they were your own family.

Strong second story in the Children of Merlin series

This is the second book in the Children of Merlin series. A well written page turner that started out with a bang however fizzled a little for me bc Drew and Michael's love is overshadowed by his first love. Micheal's first wife is a written as wonderful caring women who almost outshines Drew. Nonetheless I enjoyed the story very much and look forward to reading about the other destined mates of the magical Tremaines.

Readable, at least

I got this as a Goodreads Firstreads win, so I'm going to summarize a few points here while the book is still fresh in my mind since I don't have time for a fully involved review:

1. Felt like it took too long to read.
Why? I'm a fast reader. I can get through the early books of the Wheel of Time in 3-5 days. This one, at (less than) half that, took me to the far end of that scale. The first half of the book kept my interest nice and fast, but the more I read, the less I started caring about what happened to the people, or in general.

2. Been there, done that.
The descendants of Merlin, and people who get their power from Morgan La Fey. Athurian-era artifacts. Anybody remember Stargate SG-1/Atlantis?

3. The raging alcoholic.
Okay, score for throwing this in as a twist, and giving Drew the balls to do what she did. However... we're talking, what, a week? Alcoholism doesn't just go away in a week, no matter how thoroughly detoxed. Sure, throw the magic in and everything's hunky-dory, but there is such a thing as relying TOO MUCH on the magic.

4. Drew's got a pair.
This is one ballsy woman. After what we see her face early on in the book, she seems to have this bottomless pit of determination, while still maintaining a healthy dose of "what if"? (Not like she lets that stop her. Like I said, she's got a pair.) I was cheering her on through the entire detox. That gave a REAL nice balance to the whiny high schooler she became any time her gift/power was involved (No, I'm not putting that bit down - considering her familial status and everything else, it almost makes more sense than just about anything else in the book).

All in all, it felt like the first half of the book is where Squires really took her time and thought out what she was writing. Maybe even first 2/3 - then its almost as if a reminder popped up on the calender and it became, "Oh, crap! Deadline!"

I do plan on reading other books in this series, so I can get a better feel for Squires as an author.
