Raine Taylor has one goal – justice for her murdered sister. She knows Genie's husband strangled her and left her in an alley – Peter had been threatening to kill his wife for years. The police said there was no proof Peter Northrup killed Genie. So it was up to Raine to make him pay.

When Detective Connor Donovan answers a call about a trespasser outside Northrup's house, he finds a woman running down the street. When he tries to stop her, he's left holding her hoodie as she strikes out like a ninja then vanishes like smoke.

Connor quickly realizes Raine is his mysterious trespasser. Now he has to figure out why she was outside Northrup's house at three A.M. Raine isn't his usual criminal – she's a schoolteacher who coaches a tae-kwon-do team of under-privileged girls. And he's wildly attracted to her.

Raine needs to stay away from Connor. She has a plan to deal with Northrup, and she can't get involved with a cop. But like two magnets drawing together, she can't resist him. Can Connor help her find justice for Genie? Or will her sister's killer claim another victim before they can stop him?

Good read from start to finish
By Mary Gramlich
Raine Taylor has no reason to believe in any law enforcement system. especially the police who have done nothing but brush her off when it comes to her sister’s murder. She knows who did it and if justice is a dish best served cold than this man is going to know what that feels like after she kicks him to the curb. Raine can defend herself and has honed her martial arts skills to perfection, so goading a murderer is not going to have her break a sweat. But Detective Connor Donovan disagrees with her less than great idea and is going to use all of his charms to convince her otherwise especially since he knows what her amazing plan of action is and he does not like it one little bit. Connor and his family have been in law enforcement longer than he likes to think about which given him an edge on getting to the bottom of things. Problem for Connor right now is he is distracted by Raine the woman, and being lost in thought of a gorgeous woman is when you make mistakes.

Convincing Raine to even have a meal with him was a herculean effort but once she did a bigger problem erupted with their inability to keep a comfortable, professional distance. To say there is chemistry between them would be an understatement since they just light up the night with a soul searching kiss. Both know they need to keep a clear head and when an agreement between them to work on resolving Raine’s sisters murder together becomes the best resolution Connor starts to question his judgment. Connor knows Raine wants revenge not justice but he feels teamwork is the only way to keep her safe is if he is right by her side on the street and in the bedroom nonstop. A relationship may freak they both out, and adjusting to something akin to an emotion neither wants to claim is an issue but two great minds can solve a murder or so they hope.

Raine and Connor battle each other as much as they do together but one thing is for sure they can take care of the bad guys during the day and draw strength in each other’s arms every night. No matter what tries to come between them life is so much better when they are together.

I can't wait to read more from the author
By Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon
Although this is book four in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

This story centers on Connor Donovan and similar to the rest of his family, he’s involved in law enforcement.

A detective, Connor usually doesn’t take the type of phone call about people trespassing. It’s below his jurisdiction, but that fateful call is going to change his life.

Arriving at the scene, he encounters a woman running and when he engages her, all he’s left with is an item of clothing and a bruised chest from the kick she delivers before vanishing. Not one to be deterred, Connor is determined to uncover the mysterious woman.

Raine Taylor is a martial arts sensei, training underprivileged girls. Her goal, however, is to find the evidence to prove her brother-in-law murdered her sister. This may take her to the edge and over legal channels. The last thing she wants is to get involved with a cop.

If you like romantic suspense, this was a great story with twists and turns along the way. The tension between the two leads was palpable.

Raine is a force to be reckoned with and sometimes, I found her trying. She’s still likable and heroic though.

Connor’s relationship with his family was fantastic. They support each other and they’re the type of family we all want.

I can’t wait to read more from this author and am about to pick up earlier works in the series. I’m a big fan now of the Donovan family.

With thanks to Shy vs. The Writer.

Excellent!
By stacejb
This was my favorite book of the series so far.

I loved Raine. A teacher/tae kwon do instructor at the school, she's very determined to do what's right for the people around her, even risking her own safety to help her students. I also liked that even though she's an independent woman, she's not afraid to admit she needs help proving her sister's husband was the one who killed her.

Connor was great. Even though Raine was fiercely independent, he was patient and waited her out until she admitted she needed his help. Instead of thinking she was crazy he immediately believed her and set aside time to help get justice for her sister. He even took interest in tae kwon do and in Raine's students, which he didn't have to do.

The other Donovan siblings make appearances, as does Rose, their mother. We once again see how great they are with each other, how quickly they accept Raine as one of their own, and how they band together in a time of crisis.

This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the other books in the series as well simply because they're good.

Eugene Onegin: A Novel in Verse (Oxford World's Classics), by Alexander Pushkin

Eugene Onegin is the master work of the poet whom Russians regard as the fountainhead of their literature. Set in 1820s Russia, Pushkin's verse novel follows the fates of three men and three women. Engaging, full of suspense, and varied in tone, it also portrays a large cast of other characters and offers the reader many literary, philosophical, and autobiographical digressions, often in a highly satirical vein. Eugene Onegin was Pushkin's own favorite work, and this new translation conveys the literal sense and the poetic music of the original.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Review

"James E. Falen's translation of Eugene Onegin conveys with accuracy and utmost fidelity the effervescent depths and heady verve of Pushkin's sparkling and profound masterpiece. Its updated language and style will take Falen's translation well into the 21st century. The notes are invaluable for students."--Sonia Ketchian, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"A lively and readable translation."--Sr. Anna M. Conklin, Spurling University

"Everything about this edition of the new translation of Eugene Onegin is superb. Mr. Falen is an amazing translator: he fully carries out his program of retaining 'both the literary sense and the poetic music of the original, and the poem's spontaneity and wit."--Lina Bernstein, Franklin Marshall College

"Pushkin's masterpiece has had many translators, most of whom have turned this greatest Russian poet into an embarrassment. James Falen's English version is the first to approximate Pushkin's flawless poetic form and sparkling wise content. It is a miracle of ingenuity and grace, which will enter Eugene Onegin into English."--Caryl Emerson, Princeton University

"It is a great service to the field that you have made this excellent, teachable translation available in an inexpensive edition for students of Russian literature. Bless you!"--Carol Ueland, Drew University

A Really Fun Translation of a Classic....
By Jodi
I have read four translations of this novel and James Falen's is my favorite one. He has translated Pushkin's classic in a fun, witty way which doesn't take too much away from the original Russian version (which I have also read). Granted, something is always lost in a translation, but it certainly doesn't take away from the humor and wit of this translation. If you are interested in a literal, as-close-to-the-original-as-possible translation, then I highly suggest Nabokov's translation, which (in my opinion) is somewhat dry and boring, but extremely accurate. It is all a matter of taste...what the reader wants. If you want accuracy, you will have to sacrifice some of the fun. If you want the fun, you will have to sacrifice some of the accuracy. I prefer the fun, therefore I preferred this version of Onegin.

An excellent translation of an incomparable work
By A Customer
Eugene Onegin was Pushkin's favorite among all his works, and although it seems to take a back seat to some of the great late-19th century Russian novels among western readers, Russians themselves tend to prize it above all other works of their country's literature. In case you're not familiar with the story, it deals mainly with two of the title character's ill-fated relationships: one with his friend and neighbor Vladimir Lensky, which ends tragically due to a very unnecessary rivalry over Olga Larin; and the other with Olga's sister Tatyana, which never comes to fruition because Eugene initially rejects her, only to fall in love with her later. Interwoven among all this, Pushkin himself periodically appears to invoke his muse or to digress on such seemingly unrelated topics as his penchant for women's feet.
The work can't possibly be praised enough in a single review, and I won't try to do so; suffice it to say that Eugene's provincial boredom, Tatyana's passion, and Vladimir's poetic romanticism are all splendidly drawn, and many of Pushkin's digressions have justly become proverbs in his native land. Presumably much of the reason that the novel doesn't receive quite so much attention in the non-Russian speaking world is that, due to its verse structure (it consists of 14-line stanzas in iambic tetrameter with a consistent ababccddeffegg rhyme scheme), it's very hard to translate while still retaining both the meaning and the delightfully spirited rhythm of the original. Vladimir Nabokov asserted very emphatically back in the 1960s that any faithful translation would have to almost completely sacrifice the original's lyric quality, and Nabokov's translation is notoriously dull, if extremely adherent to Pushkin's exact meaning. Not speaking Russian, I haven't read the original, nor have I read any other translations than the one I'm reviewing, so I can't say for sure how it compares, but I can say that Falen's translation is extremely good. It adheres, for all intents and purposes, exactly to Pushkin's meter, and does so without any particularly awkward diction, resulting in an end-product that must at least approach the beauty of the Russian version. Some others seem to agree with me: in the preface to his own recent (1999) translation of Onegin, Douglas Hofstadter praises Falen's translation so highly that he has to spend a section explaining why he bothered with a translation when Falen had already done it so perfectly. While most bilingual readers would probably state that to call Falen's (or anybody else's) translation "perfect" would be a stretch, it is still a delightful work, and hopefully other English-speaking readers will acquire, as I have, a better appreciation of the beauty of Pushkin's greatest work as a result of it.

The next best thing to Russian
By James Ferguson
James Falen has offered his version of the Russian classic, and has captured both the meaning and the verse. The stanzas flow effortlessly in Falen's hands, it may very well be the best translation yet. Of course, Nabokov is not around to cast his judgement on it. He panned every other translation that had been printed and penned his own in prose, so as not to stray too far from original meaning. But, even he said it was no more than a crib, as what Puskin had achieved in Eugene Onegin was a restructuring of the Russian language, giving it a beauty few had thought it possessed.
Orlando Figes similarly noted that Onegin was the first truly Russian lyrical novel. Pushkin had forsaken the standard French and sought to find the words expressive enough to convey the contradictory nature of the Russian soul. The novel in verse ebbs and flows as Pushkin takes you from St. Petersburg to Moscow to the Russian countryside, weaving a charming tale with many fascinating asides. The texture is so rich and the characters so enduring that this lyrical novel has attained mythological status in Russian literature. No understanding of the subject is complete without having read Eugene Onegin.
But, if language is essential to understanding Onegin then any translation will ultimately come up short. However, Falen has shown great respect for the novel and its language, unlike Douglass Hofstadter's juvenile attempt to translate it. Falen offers copious endnotes and a fascinating introduction. He tips his hat to Nabokov and the others who have translated this novel in the past. The language Falen uses is modern, giving Onegin a freshness lacking in other translations.

Disappointed
By Devin
I purchased this book as I was looking to work with Wavemaker and thought it would provide a few insights beyond the really basic website tutorials. The book does provide some additional information but the writing style is difficult at best and given the limited additional information over the online tutorials I would recommend against the purchase of this book. The writing is ambiguous at time when explaining key points, the examples are little better than the "FREE" online tutorials, and the mobile section was weak. I really expected better from PACKT publishing.

A very useful book for beginners and advanced users
By ARadovan
When I first used Wavemaker there was no books available about it, so I had to find various ways to learn how to use Wavemaker and develop web applications with it: with the help of Screencasts, trial and error method, analyzing logs etc.

With the release of this book things are much simpler and it is much easier to get to know all the key functionality of Wavemaker. The book is suitable for all kinds of users, from beginners to the most advanced developers. It describes everything from the simplest to the most complex features of Wavemaker, like running demo applications, opening Wavemaker project as Eclipse projects, using custom components and services, etc. Beginners can develop their own application without the knowledge of Hibernate and Spring framework, and instantly see the results.

One of the most interesting parts of the book advises users how to design your application, on what to look for and how to maximize performance of applications optimized for various platforms and devices.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Harper's superb historical trilogy set during the Crusades (The Mosaic of Shadows, etc.) are likely to be disappointed by this middling thriller, yet another variation on the Indiana Jones theme. In 1947, the British, Americans and Russians are all looking for the legendary shield of Achilles because it may contain Element 61, a chemical element then missing from the periodic table that could be used in weapons. C.S. Grant, a British adventurer in need of a government pardon, agrees to help recover a murdered archeologist's notebook that may hold clues to the shield's whereabouts. A number of stock supporting characters, including an attractive female archeologist and an elderly scholar, accompany Grant to Crete in search of answers. While Harper offers some interesting discussions about the origins of Homer's poems, some readers may weary of such formulaic plot elements as a slow-motion romance, gunfights, hairbreadth escapes and the loss of a key clue. From Booklist
Fans of thrillers with an Indiana Jones angle who just can’t wait for the next James Rollins or Steve Berry novel should check out this very entertaining tale. Set in the late 1940s, it features a disparate group of adventurers (including a disgraced British solider, a beautiful archaeologist, and a university professor) who are searching for an ancient treasure that could have important ramifications for the postwar world. As they race from place to place, following clues to the treasure’s location, they discover that key elements of Greek mythology might not be so mythological after all. With a lightning-fast pace, a cast of colorful characters, plenty of twists and turns, and a story that reaches into the past and the future, the novel is sure to please fans of the historical-thriller genre. This is the author’s seventh novel, following his three-volume series set during the First Crusade and three Napoléon-era novels written as Edwin Thomas. It’s a stand-alone, apparently, although readers will no doubt finish this one and immediately begin clamoring for a series. --David Pitt

"In the tradition of The Da Vinci Code, a page-turner of a novel. Like Dan Brown, Tom Harper knows how to ratchet up the tension" Choice magazine

Indiana Stones style story tackles greatest legend of all time!
By Joshua T. Cohen
Tom Harper has written some really amazing and fascinating adventures, in the "historical fiction" genre. Starting with his great series with Demetrious Askiates in Byzantium during the first crusades, Tom Harper continues his writing, with a story taking place shortly after WWII.

The Lost Temple opens up on the invasion of Greece by the Nazi's in the beginning of WWII. We are introduced into our cunning main character, Grant. As a disgraced ex-special solider, he eventually turned to gun running for the Jews before there was a state of Israel. He had been giving a mysterious tablet, with a language not yet deciphered, and dating back to over 3000yrs ago. Uncoded, this language, Linear B (a real language which was deciphered in the 1950's), would be a map leading to not only the worlds most historical and mythical treasure, but something that could change the future for all human kind.

Grant finds himself in the company of a British "spook," an Oxford professor, a CIA man who only goes by the name of "Jackson," and a former lover and patriot of Greece, Marina. Hot on their trails are the Russians, former Nazi's, and a wild adventure leading them across the middle east, and all around the Mediterean Sea and the Black Sea.

Now, before saying, "Yeah, i've heard this one before," I don't think comparing this book to the "Da Vinci Code," is the best comparison. It is closer tied to the Indiana Jones series. Tom Harper's writing is very sharp, and you can tell he took great pains to do the immense amount of research for this novel. Not at one point did I ever feel that I was reading a text book, the history flowed naturally from the characters, and seemed real.

You might as well call his a 1940's historical action novel, because that is exactly what it is. Through the almost non-stop action, we learn about what our hero's and "gods" were, or could've been like, all while on the race to find our most precious treasure, of a man that will forever live on in name, no matter how long.

Readers who enjoy history, historical fiction, puzzles and adventure are sure to Enjoy Tom Harpers, "The Lost Temple!"

I REALLY wanted to like this book
By Gabriel
Now I'm not one to quit a book in the middle of reading it, but if I were, I would have quit this one. There are some glaring omissions firstly. The blurbs on the front and back covers make numerous references to certain things - on the front "...the world's deadliest treasure," "Fans of thrillers with an Indiana Jones angle...", and the back "The secrets of the distant past may hold the key to the newest threats of the modern world..." (I guess the operative word there is MAY) and actually the summary on the back references "a dangerous prophecy...drawing near."

I'm a pretty generous and forgiving reader, HOWEVER, this book suffers from an extremely weak plot and wooden characters. The main character, Sam Grant, has very little depth to him and is quite shallow, as are the rest of the group who the author assembled for no good reason. There's Jackson the American who is there simply to curse and be stereotypically "American," (thank you British author), there's the obvious love interest Marina, Reed - the only character who actually causes the plot to advance, Muir, another angry cursing type, British this time.

I felt like I did after watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, in a sense, "ehhhhh."

There is no mention of any prophecy in the book, not really as interesting or exciting as an Indiana Jones entry (SPOILER - I'm really disappointed in the treasure that they are after, I mean, REALLY? It's kind of stupid and has no real impact on the world - as the blurbs would lead you to believe. In sum, the object of their quest is just plain silly and stupid, however I compliment the author on his research.)

I've no idea why the author did this, and maybe only I care, but for a book that sticks closely to Grant's perspective, the illogical switching about 2/3 into the book makes no sense. Why after 250 pages did he feel like the random Russian soldier gets to be the focal point? Or why after following Grant's perspective nearly the entire time do we jarringly switch to Marina? It just doesn't make sense. Also on an editorial note, there were instances in the middle of a large conversation where the author doesn't clearly state who is speaking - now maybe this is just my gripe, but I actually found myself on more than a few occassions not really certain who was speaking. When everyone in the group is talking, and there is a clear indication of a new person saying something, but no indication of who it was, not even by inference on the reader's part, that's just annoying.

So in sum, I would probably not recommend this book, given the number of really good adventure novels out there. I had hopes for The Lost Temple...but it isn't compelling in any way. I honestly just don't care if they find the Temple or not, or the silly and stupid treasure for which they are nonsensically seeking. Again, great research and I did like that this was about Greek history...but come on wasn't there anything more interesting for the group to go after?

Did there really need to be a semi-graphic sex scene 2/3 through? Really?

I had a lot of those moments while reading this book, where I just sat back and thought, "Mr. Harper, really? Was that totally necessary? (or) Couldn't you think of something more interesting???"

Unless you REALLY have no options, and I doubt that possibility, I would stay away from this book...it just isn't interesting at all.

Find the treasure or not, I'm not really compelled to care...and that is the death of any adventure novel.

Great Summer Read
By bettyjane
I thoroughly enjoyed it, for two reasons. I won't focus nor dispute the whole "Indiana Jones" conceit, or the stock characters, etc. I want, instead to say where Harper succeeded, because he succeeded beautifully. His grasp of ancient history, myth and legend is superb. In fact, as far as historical research goes, he did a superb job, thorough and engaging. It felt very authentic for a work of historical fiction. That's important to me. I've read too many works of fiction that were poorly researched and absolutely frustrating for anyone who is passionate about their history, as I am. Secondly, he did an excellent job with pacing. He writes the many action sequences very well, keeps the narrative moving along setting up the dramatic tension effectively. As for the characters, yes, stock characters. But I liked them. This novel was very cinematic, but I don't consider that a flaw. I was exhausted by their adventures, and towards the last quarter of the novel, I grew weary of yet another false lead, another betrayal, another kidnapping, another "just in time" rescue. So maybe Mr. Harper could have cut out one or two more of those events? Whatever. But it was fun, and I don't regret a second of it. If you love the history of ancient Greece, the Iliad, the Odyssey, and poured over Edith Hamilton and Bulfinch, or Plutarch and Herodotus in your youth, this book will not disappoint.

Marie-Antoinette and Count Fersen: The Untold Love Story, by Evelyn Farr

A new edition draws on fresh evidence from archive sources—including decoded secret correspondence—to peel back the layers of misinformation obscuring the Queen's great love affair and to reveal its impact on the destiny of the French Royal Family

The tragic life of Marie-Antoinette, last Queen of France, has assumed almost mythical proportions. A victim of political intrigue, she was known as the "Austrian whore" and accused of every imaginable sexual and political crime. Yet after the French Revolution she was reinvented as a martyr, and the image of the woman behind the propaganda grew even more distorted. Daughter of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, Marie-Antoinette was married at the age of 15 to the heir to the French throne. The vivacious Archduchess had charm and intelligence, while the Dauphin, crowned Louis XVI in 1774, was boorish, gauche, and unable to consummate their marriage. Rebuffed by him, the young girl engaged in a hectic social life and looked elsewhere for love. This book charts her transformation from reckless teenager to dignified yet misunderstood Queen and maps out in detail her enduring relationship with Axel von Fersen. Their liaison, based on deep affection and mutual passion, began long before revolutionary storm clouds gathered over France. Although known to insiders at court, her love for the chivalrous and handsome Swedish Count was suppressed in the many attempts to manipulate the Queen's image.

An excellent study
By Anna-lena Berg
This is an excellent account of the surprisingly little known, and often misrepresented, love story between Queen Marie Antoinette and the Swedish Count Axel von Fersen. Ms Farr has gone to the primary documents instead of relying on secondary sources, and discovered the astonishing truth behind this controversial affair. I find her interpretations highly convincing and backed up by available data. This book is recommended reading for anyone interested in Marie Antoinette and the French revolution.

I enjoyed reading this book!
By Erna De Keijser
This book makes Marie-Antoinette very much look like a real person (which she was off course) and I like to believe that the story Evelyn Farr tells us is true because it would mean that MA did enjoy real love with a capital L in her short life.

Review

"It's simply, organized, easy to read, and can help you avoid expensive HR issues. … deserves a place on every supervisor's bookshelf and in every HR Department." —Inland Empire Business Journal

From the Inside Flap

If your company has a full-fledged human resources department, consider yourself lucky. But whether it does or not, you as a manager need to be well versed in several critical HR areas. Having a thorough grasp of basic human resources issues means you can make better decisions—and faster ones—on everything from hiring and firing to performance appraisal to compensation.

A thorough and accessible guide written in plain English, The Manager’s Guide to HR gets right to the point on dozens of major topics, hot-button issues, and common misconceptions. The book provides a litany of dos and don’ts to follow regarding:

·       Hiring. How to write the perfect job description, then recruit, interview, and check the eligibility of candidates.

·       Training. How to make sure your employees have everything they need to do their jobs well, safely, and legally—and how to document it all. Includes information on sexual harassment training.

·       Compensation. How the Fair Labor Standards Act and Equal Pay Act affect your business, how overtime must be calculated, and how to avoid violating these seemingly complex regulations.

·       Benefits. The nuts and bolts of healthcare coverage, life insurance, the Family and Medical Leave Act, COBRA, leave eligibility, and much more.

·       Employment Law. An overview of federal laws, what they protect against, and how they are enforced, and what compensation may be required when they are broken. Includes key information on federal, state, and local protected classes.

·       Sexual Harassment and Workplace Violence. Detailed definitions and case law examples to prevent your company from allowing harassment, and necessary precautions, documentation, training, and reporting pertaining to violence or the threat of violence.

·       Privacy. What you are and are not entitled to know when conducting background checks, how (and how closely) you can monitor your employees, and what constitutes an invasion of privacy. Plus valuable information on defamation, intentional provocation, and much more.

·       Performance Evaluation. How to bring your appraisal, the employee’s self-review, and the job description together to create a fair, consistent, and effective evaluation.

·       Termination and Separation. What does at-will employment mean? Right and wrong ways to fire an employee, how to use progressive discipline, what you need to know about the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, and much more.

Finally, The Manager’s Guide to HR gives you step-by-step instructions for documenting everything and keeping bulletproof records. You’ll learn the elements of a well-kept and up-to-date personnel file, including what records should not be kept in that file. The book also includes sample documents from OSHA and other regulatory agencies, with thorough explanations of their purpose and value to you, your company, and your employees.

With the priceless information in this book, you’ll be on the same page as your HR department (and your company), and you’ll know that you are treating your employees as they deserve to be treated—and as the law requires.

One chapter alone worth the price of the book
By K. Lowry
Ben Franklin claims an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I am an employment law attorney. I represent plaintiffs in sexual harassment cases only. I bought this book because the chapter on sexual harassment alone is excellent. Why did I buy it? Because it lists all the steps to follow to prevent harassment from occurring, and the steps to follow if harassment occurs and needs to be investigated. I use books like this as depo guidelines. If an employer doesn't follow steps like those outlined in this book, I will win the lawsuit. If the employer does follow the steps, then I can only win if the harassment was perpetrated by a supervisory-level employee (employer is strictly liable in California in that case). If you are an HR professional in California and follow this man's steps to prevent and investigate sexual harassment complaints, my caseload will diminish. Isn't that alone worth the price of this book if you are a California employer?

Review
"Tradition Class Pride deserves to become the new bible for coaches of high school runners. Bravo!" - Matt Fitgerald, author of 80/20 running, Racing Weight Cookbook, The Runner's Body and more

From the Inside Flap
To Jen Rosario and Mary Linhares: Without your love and support, we would never have been able to give so much of ourselves to runners and running. You are our greatest inspiration. And in gratitude to the runners and coaches of Saint Louis University High School Cross Country teams across the years. Your passion and dedication have embodied the spirit of "Tradition, Class and Pride."Go Jr. Bills!

From the Back Cover
From the foreword by Mario Fraioli, senior editor of Competitor Magazine:"Coaching is far more than stringing together the right combination of Xs and Os, particularly in a team sport as unpredictable as Cross Country. It's about teaching your athletes the skills they need to be successful on and off the racecourse. It's about helping them improve not only as runners, but also as people. Whether your program has a long history of success, or you're a new coach trying to get a handful of kids ready to take the starting line for the first time, the secrets, strategies and schedules Jim and Ben share in this book are invaluable and provide a proven roadmap for putting your cross country team on the path to building its own dynasty."

Build a cross country dynasty!
By Carter Snow
Read this if you want to be a better coach. I have read a number of books about training theory, team building, etc. and while I have learned a great deal from them I have found many of them dry and frankly boring. Tradition Class Pride takes an unique approach to telling the story of how to build a successful cross country team from two experienced coaches who have done just that.

Ben and Jim's stories add an exciting narrative to the nuts and bolts of coaching cross country runners to be successful athletes and incredible young people. You will find no better book that clearly details how to build a cross country dynasty. If you are a new coach trying to build a team, or a veteran coach looking to add one ingredient to make you team even better you will be happy to have read this book. Ultimately, I often judge coaches by the simple question, "Would I want to run for them?" After reading Tradition Class Pride I can say without question "I would run for Jim or Ben in a heartbeat." Ben and Jim make you want to be a better coach and give you the tools build a stronger team in an ethical student centered way. Bravo!

Great read for coaches and fans of cross-country
By E Andrew Karandjeff
This is a great read if you're a new coach, a seasoned veteran or just a fan of the sport who wants to see under the hood. The authors do a great job of balancing out very detailed practical knowledge along with great stories and vignettes from their personal experiences that really work to drive their points home. While not a coach myself, I have a XC athlete in high school now and have been a huge fan of cross country since my own high school career, so I felt like I knew a fair amount about the sport. That said, I now feel like I have the owner's manual on what it takes for a program to be successful.

Inspiring even for non-coaches
By Shannon Linhares
While I'm just a runner myself and not a coach, I found Jim and Ben's book to be inspiring. I picked up running post-college and never ran on a team, so this book helped me understand the technical aspects behind the sport more than I did before. For instance, I've paid more attention to my form lately, which has helped me get through some tough runs. That being said, this is in no way a technically-heavy book- it's filled with great stories from these experienced coaches. I'd recommend it not only for coaches, but for those enthusiastic about the sport of running as well!
